Get Certified with SRT
Becoming a licensed security guard in Texas starts with getting your certification. SRT offers the official training you need to begin that process. This is a required course for anyone applying for a Level II non-commissioned security license in Texas. The course is online, state-approved, and can be completed in one day! Once you finish it, you’ll receive a certificate that you’ll use when applying for your license through the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS).

Applying for a Security License on TOPS
Once you complete your Level II training and receive your certificate, you’ll move on to the official licensing process through the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS). This happens on the Texas Online Private Security (TOPS) portal.
You’ll need to go through these steps:
- Go to https://tops.portal.texas.gov/psp-self-service/login/auth
- Scroll down and select Start Individual Application
- Choose Unarmed, then click next
- Cgiise Non-Commissioned Security Officer, then click next
- Fill out your information exactly as it appears on your ID
- Enter the Business Code or License Code provided by your employee
- Continue through the application and make sure everything is accurate
- Submit the application and pay the required fee
- You’ll receive a verification email, be sure to confirm it so you can log in later
- After that, you may upload any required documents (like your driver’s license, DD214 if applicable, and your Level II certificate)
- Once your application is accepted by DPS, you’ll receive an email with a 15-digit transaction number
- Log back into your TOPS account and use that number to schedule your fingerprint appointment with IdentoGO
- After your appointment, take a photo of your fingerprint receipt and save it, you’ll need to upload this to TOPS
- DPS will email you once everything is completed
- Your pocket card (your license) will be mailed to the address you provided in your application. If it hasn’t arrived within a month, contact TOPS to check on the status
